Seminar on Postel Contribution on Economics and Culture
This is a tough, yet interesting, seminar. The official title is: "Post & Telecommunication: Engine for Growth and Pillars of Civilization." There are four speakers, each tried to look at the macro factors of post and telco industry. How these two industries altered and be altered by culture, economics, civilization; and affect each other. Organized by Indonesian Mastel.
I took a couple of notes:
- The dying post industry: revitalize, reposition, re-everything
- There's an opportunity to transformation post office into P.O.S.T (Point of Services & Transaction)
- Innovation in telecommunication services can create unthinkable changes in cultural & social behavior (there are a number of examples, but they are very Indonesian in context; so I'll describe it later on)
- Increasingly concerning is the dominance of pop culture in the current society; information technology helps accelerate the pace and adoption. And on the other hand technology can assist in countering the influence by spreading the desired value.
Well, part of fun is the intellectual exercise. Listening to experts from outside of my field: there are three social scientists, one economist, one anthropologist, one archaeologist. They are very credible, but I need really to tune my brain wave in order to understand and make sense of what they are saying... :-)
